Milwaukie


Known as the “Dogwood City” of the West and the birthplace of the Bing Cherry; Milwaukie was settled and claimed by Pioneer Lot Whitcomb in 1847 and was formally incorporated in 1903 by an Act of the Oregon State Legislature. Its location along the Willamette River attracted entrepreneurs who established lumber mills at the turn of the century. The old wood trimmed buildings from the city’s early days still stand, preserving the city’s historic essence.

Between 1950 and 2010, the population of Milwaukie grew from 5,000 to over 20,000. Homes are reminiscent of the area’s history and future development. Popular Elk Rock Island has designated habitats to protect and nurture several species of plants, mammals, reptiles and birds, and is located in the middle of the Willamette River. Accessible during the summer and autumn seasons, locals come to the area to relax and picnic among the ancient forest and explore the park’s miles of winding trails. Other local outdoor activities include public parks, kayaking, fishing and biking.
